The contact points are open now

  • 2 Jul, 2024

the contact points were opened on 1st July. The summer vacations are now over. On 1st, Sana informed me that I'll go to the field the next day. I expected the next day that I'll go to the same contact point in Chandni Chowk, Hathi Park. Either that or I'll go to Okhla Mandi, a contact point nearer to Jamia Milia Islamia. Hadi was definitely going to go there, I knew that much. On the morning of 2nd July I had called my supervisor to ask where I'd have to go. It was Hathi Park near Chandni Chowk metro. I reached the contact point and saw a couple of familiar faces of the children, but Sonam arrived 15 minutes later. Rajan, an 11th class kid, laid down mats, and only after Rohit, a 6th-class child of the contact point did the sweeping of the constructed elevated shade. A very unenthusiastic Rohit had swept the floor, but working cooperatively to take care of the place, equipment, and each other was normal. At least its promoted to do that, to imbibe a sense of ownership.

Rajan sat down under the plastic conical shade, on the weaved plastic straw mats. He took out his sketching book and started working on the Beerus sketch that he made. He showed me completed Goku sketches and Jujitsu Kaisen sketches too. All of them were good, and did not feel amateurish. As I don't watch Dragon Ball or any anime other than Ghibli productions at the moment, I didn't and couldn't comment on the characters themselves but I liked the sketches, so I complimented that aspect. His loose uncertain-mouthed face took the shape of a smiling face, one with energy and pride. The other children were still playing on the slides while Sonam at the particular moment was involved with the mother and the documents of Vishnoo, a 12 year child who didn't know how to study in hindi, read or write. According to his age he would have been in 6th class. But his study level was not even up to the 5th-class level. The discussion with the mother was about the admission of her child.

    Pretentious

Trying to do something new, ambitious, great, difficult or absurd may be termed as pretentious quite often. To conform is to be normal and not be pretentious. To try to make a song which sounds weird, write a story which doesn't make any sense and stepping on stage seriously may be labelled as pretentious by others. It carries with it a negative connotation, therefore people do not wish to be seen as "pretentious". Lets see, what does being pretentious really mean.

All We Imagine as Light- This year's Grand Prix winner

All We Imagine as Light is a beautiful film. It has all the characteristics of a memory that is stirred within the mind when you smell a particular food, hear the sound of the train, or get a sip of chai. It is a film with Cinematography by Ranabir Das. His signature composition, close-ups, and color coding are a treat to witness. The direction by Payal Kapadia enabled the conception of this film.

The play "K" is based on "The Trial" by Kafka. It was performed by Renaisstance Theatre Society. I'll consider it a flagship play, a fine play with an amazing ensemble.

The following is a writing from Ansh Vats, a former commerce student who is interested in the arts and theatrics. He has performed in monologues and skits, and it's always a refreshing experience to see his performance. When I had the chance to watch " Dhoomrapan" in Kamani Auditorium I asked him to come with me. I have nagged him for weeks to write a recollection or memoir of sorts, and my prayers have been answered. Here comes Ansh Vats.

The INA market and Dilli Haat are two markets. Buying and consuming is the main reason for people to come here, at least for middle class individuals or anyone more privileged than them.

Childrens Cooperative Reflection Workshop day one.(25 June 2024)

The first day of the Childrens Cooperative Reflection Workshop, at the Indian Social Institute on Lodhi Road was a new, quite pleasant experience for me. I had never been to a workshop before where I was the "bhaiya" and the children look up to me for help and guidance. Well of course in school I had been called a bhaiya by my juniors, but it seemed more of an obligation for them, since the age gap was a few months at most.

what does it take for an artist to show his art

But a painting is painted on a canvas. it is but a reflection of what the artist saw. the painter saw the tree and painted it with its thousands of shiny waxy leaves, its dry bark full of crackles and gaps. The painter looked closer into the tree and saw a home for the squirrel, a nest for the pigeon too.

    धूम्रपान

When I got to know that I can watch a play that day, I was excited. Not that my excitement was anything special, but simply put I am always excited when there is a live performance, as the norm nowadays is recorded media which has been edited to perfection. I didn't even know the name of the play. I usually don't ask my father what I am going to witness. I dont ask for too much information. The theatrical performance of the team is enough for an audience member to understand the message, experience the acting, reacting, sound, lights and every reaction in the flow of act in between, if it all falls into place as intended.

I should talk to other people at the organisation if i dont have much to do

On the third day of the second week of the internship, on 20 June I was quite bored. I reached the organisation on time, sat down at my cubicle and wrote a report of yesterday. Calling my supervisor, I got to know about some modifications which had to be made in the "Life skills" Module of career planning. I did that and didn't talk to anyone, as Hadi was sick and not present. I had my lunch and today I didn't even read any book, even though I have one to complete. It was a boring day not due to the circumstances but due to my own lack of initiative. It were not the environmental or situational factors but internal factors. I left on time and came back home, being given a seat on the yellow line by a man who saw me giving my seat to a woman.

Butterflies field visit Chandni Chowk & Sadar Bazaar

On the second day of the second week of my internship at Butterflies, I visited contact points. These contact points are quite near Chandni Chowk metro station, a walking distance. I was aware that there'd be no proper structure made by butterflies for education, instead open areas were used as open classrooms for education and interaction. My supervisor gave me the directions to the Hathi Park contact point, with the landmark being the Barkhandi Mandir where I reached and called Sonam, the program officer for the contact point. She took me to the park, it was around 10 am in the morning with blistering heat and loo going through the trees. When i was waiting at the Barkhandi mandir i saw beggars, scraggy men with saffron robes and some with no clothes at all. One of the people who were coming to worship at the mandir brought chaach, and distributed it among the homeless people. Previously smoking a bidi, they now pounced at the chaach which was being donated so graciously. Right behind me, on the footpath, there lay a man with no clothes on, looked as if his entire body was sucked dry of water because of the sun. He called bhaiya and when i looked at him he asked for water. When i gave him my water bottle he insisted that he waste some of it by instead having me pour water into his hand and then he could drink it. A litre was gone in seconds, but i didn't regret it. Soon after Sonam called me and picked me up from the temple, her entire face covered in a rupatta. She took it off when she was with me, walked with me talking about what I plan to do today. I was not really sure but i had thought of playing some games with the children which would involve everyone and didn't require strenuous effort. I learnt these games from play for peace. Unfortunately I couldn't play these games due to my own lack of initiative. I wasn't pushed by anyone to do so.

I woke up late today, on 13th June, the 4th day of my Internship. I had not received any message from my supervisor regarding the location of the visit. I called him, asked him for an update and I got the answer that I'll have to come to the office instead. I got ready and left for Chhatarpur.

Maybe tomorrow I'll go into the field

I started the day of 12th June with the thought in mind that I would be going to the field and interacting with children. I don't really like children of any sort, but due to the nature of my course being a bachelors, that too being the first year, the department aptly concluded that we can work with children because we are young adults ourselves, and being empathetic will be more natural working with marginalized children. I found that reasonable and was reasonably mentally prepared to interact with children who probably annoying. I know because I was a child too, just like everyone else. When I called my supervisor to ask where I'd have to reach for the fieldwork, I got to know that it was not possible today. I was asked to reach the NGO's office. Hadi's supervisor, an educator was busy and assigned Hadi to my supervisor.

As a student of social work, I am required to complete a 120-hour summer internship in an agency that specializes in child development, protection, and upliftment. I have two supervisors, one in my department and the other in the agency. They asked me my address so that I can be provided the agency nearest to me.
